Legal Resources
UW Student Legal Services
UW Student Legal Services (SLS) is an on-campus law office located in the Husky Union Building (HUB) Room 306 that offers free 40-minute consultations on a multitude of legal matters. The office provides a safe and confidential space for all UW-Seattle students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional) who have legal questions or concerns.
Students seek assistance from SLS for issues such as:
- Landlord/Tenant
- Discrimination
- Immigration
- Protection orders
- Name and gender markers
- Estate planning (wills, powers of attorney, healthcare directives)
- Criminal
- Divorce
- Auto collisions and insurance
SLS educates students about their rights and responsibilities, provides legal advice and resources, negotiates disputes, represents them in court, and prepares them for small claims matters. In addition, the office offers general informational sessions and “how-to” presentations on a variety of legal matters, such as knowledge of rights. Regular SLS office hours are Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, with more limited hours during exams and breaks in the academic calendar. Visit the SLS website to learn more and schedule a consultation.

Conference Funding
Sometimes the Allen School is able to help students with conference costs such as airfare, conference registration, lodging, and ground travel. Due to limited funding, only Allen School students who are presenting a research paper, session, or have other active leadership involvement within a nationally-certified conference will be considered. The Allen School may fund up to $500 per student per year. We will review requests as they are received, and applicants should expect to hear back from our staff within a 2-week timeframe. You can apply via this form.
Advice from Students
Everyone’s experience will be different, but many students find it is helpful to hear from their peers about their experience as Allen School students. Check out our Navigating CSE Guide developed by Allen School student leaders to introduce incoming students with Allen School resources and offer advice from fellow peers. The Allen School also has a team of undergraduate Peer Advisers that are happy to meet with students to provide academic and career advice based on their experiences as a current CSE student.
Student Surveys
Each year, we survey our graduating seniors (CSE NetID required) about their destination after the Allen School. View previous surveys for information on employers, job titles, and salary ranges of recent graduates.
Alumni Profiles
Catch up with some of our undergraduate alumni to learn what they are doing with their Allen School education.
Policy & Proceedures
It’s always helfpul to review policies and proceedures whenever you have questions. Our continuation policy can be found here, for example.
Give Feedback
We want to hear from you! The Allen School encourages students to provide us with feedback on any school-related issues, events, etc. We are always interested in enhancing the student experience. The following are some ways you can get involved and provide us with feedback.
Contact the Advisers
The advisers are available to you via phone, email, or in-person. If you wish to meet in person, check the advising calendar for drop-in hours or email to arrange a longer meeting.
Contact Your Instructor
If you have feedback about a specific course (especially something that might need immediate attention), it is best to contact the instructor directly.
Come to Lunch with the Director
Every quarter, the director of the Allen School, Magdalena Balazinska, hosts a “Lunch with the Director” event. This free lunch provides students an open forum in which they can ask direct questions of the school leadership. Watch the Allen School Discussion Boards on EdStem for information about when the lunch will take place each quarter.
Give Feedback Anonymously
We hope that all students are comfortable coming to us directly with suggestions or concerns. However, we realize that in some instances students may wish to remain anonymous. To give feedback anonymously please use the Anonymous Feedback Form. Remember that we will have no way of knowing who submitted the form, so we will not be able to follow-up with you to let you know how we addressed your feedback.
