Aaron directs the operational, financial, personnel and planning activities of the UW Computer Science Laboratory. The Computer Science Laboratory (CSL) provides and supports nearly all administrative, instructional, and research computing for the faculty, staff and students in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering.
The CSL is not a “laboratory” in the normal sense of the word – physically it’s more than twenty five research labs and centers, twelve instructional labs, the computing on or under every person’s desk, cloud services hosting essential functions, inspired and innovative educational technology and business tools, and the hardware, software and network infrastructure that ties all of this together. The scale and diversity of the technology and IT services being wrangled here can be daunting at times. But with the constant of evolution in technology, comes the great and frequent opportunity to innovate.
The Computer Science Lab is also not your average “computing support organization” in the normal sense of the term because of our special position supporting computer scientists and up and coming engineers. Our group supports experimental development of computer hardware and software systems. Over the past 40 years it has many times been the first place on campus to adopt new technologies. Many cutting-edge forms of computing that have come to the University of Washington have arrived in this School and then been propagated to the University as a whole, often through the ingenious and dedicated efforts of the CSL staff. That valued position makes for an even more dynamic environment than typical computing labs. In a word, it’s an incredibly exciting place to work.
