The Allen School Advising team strives to provide relationship-focused advising and holistic support to solve problems, navigate barriers, & empower Allen School students in their journey through higher education.

Email an Advisor

Email the advisers for answers to simple, close-ended questions. For more complex questions, please plan to speak with an adviser at quick questions or by appointment. We prefer that you email our main inbox (not individual advisers) for all advising questions. If you would like your email to be directed to a specific adviser, please indicate this in your salutation.

Email best practices

For the best and most timely response:

  • Use your CS email and include your student number.
  • Do not email multiple advisers with the same question. Emailing ugrad-adviser@cs will result in quickest response times.
  • If asking for registration help, include the SLNs of all lectures & quiz sections.
  • Use salutations and signatures.
  • Check spelling, grammar, and names.
  • Wait at least 2 business days for a response before emailing again.

Scheduled Appointments

Scheduled appointments are available for all Allen School students. Students who are not currently in the Allen School should come to quick questions or email us if they can’t make Quick Question time slots. Appointments may book up to 3 weeks out, so if you are seeing no available meetings please check back soon for more availability. If you don’t have a preference on who you meet with, Allen School students can select “any available” to see the earliest appointment with any adviser. Appointments are offered both virtually and in-person.

Preparing for your advising appointment

To make the most of you advising appointment, arrive on time and bring:

  • Your proposed schedule for next quarter or year(if you are looking for feedback on your academic plan)
  • Your preferred method of taking notes
  • The list of questions or concerns you want to address
Late, cancellations, and no-show policies

We understand that life happens, technology is imperfect, and that we’re all generally doing the best we can. However, advising appointments are in high demand and can be difficult to schedule, and it is important to be considerate of both the advisers’ and other students’ time. Missing meetings deprives another student the opportunity to meet with their adviser and takes away from advisers’ time to assist students.

  • Late policy: If you are more than 15 minutes late to your scheduled advising appointment, you will be asked to reschedule.
  • Canceling appointments: If you need to cancel a scheduled appointment, please give 24 hours advance notice if possible. Even if you can’t give 24 hours notice, emailing us to let us know you can’t make it as soon as you can is greatly appreciated.
  • No-Shows: No-shows without prior notification are logged in our scheduling system. Repeat no-shows could result in a student being banned from scheduling future appointments.

Meet with Peer Advising

Allen School peer advisers can also discuss course planning, getting started with research or teaching, landing internships, getting involved with the Allen School or in the UW, and so much more. Peer Advisers are available by appointment only during the fall, winter, and spring quarters.  Connect with a Peer Adviser!

Peer advising appointment policy

In an attempt to equitably support as many prospective and current Allen School students as we can, we ask that students adhere to the following appointment policies:

Maximum Number of Appointments: A student may only schedule a maximum of three peer advising appointments per quarter. Additionally, students may schedule no more than one appointment in any 14 day period (2 week period). Please note that our peer advisers are not available for appointments during finals week of each quarter in addition to winter break, spring break, and summer break.

New appointments are available to book up to 3 weeks in advance. If you are seeing no available meetings please check back for more availability regularly as students reschedule/cancel appointments and that can make new appointments available that were previously not showing as options.

If you can’t find an appointment and need to talk about an immediate problem, current and prospective Allen School students can attend our Quick Questions (drop-in advising hours) to talk with a staff adviser. Quick Questions are available M-F during the academic year. You can also contact our Peer Advisers via email: peer-adviser@cs.washington.edu.

Personal Statement Review Appointment Guidelines: Prospective Allen School students applying via the Current UW admissions pathway can have their personal statement reviewed by a Peer Adviser twice per application cycle.

Assigned Advising

All Allen School students are paired with an assigned adviser. Your assigned adviser is listed on your My CSE Undergraduate Resources page. You can meet with your adviser for long term planning or whenever you would like to talk with someone who is more familiar with your academic journey. Here’s how to connect with your assigned adviser:

  • Email our general inbox ugrad-adviser@cs.washington.edu. We will either forward to your assigned adviser or to someone else if they can provide a quicker response. If you want to make sure your email goes only to your assigned adviser, please indicate that in your email.
  • Quick Questions: We suggest that you are as flexible as possible with who you meet during quick questions, for the shortest wait times.
  • Appointments: schedule an appointment online.

To change your assigned adviser for any reason, simply let the new adviser with whom you wish to work know, and they can make that change for you.

Appointments & Quick Questions

Allen School advisers are happy to meet with Allen School students and anyone who is interested in taking coursework in the Allen School.

Current UW Students who are not in the Allen School are welcome to come to talk about taking CSE courses and exploring the field of computer science & engineering. Due to capacity constraints, Allen School advisers will only meet with non-major UW students during Quick Questions.

Prospective transfer students should familiarize themselves with our transfer page and attend an information session. Prospective transfer students can also schedule an appointment with someone from our transfer team here or attend a =Quick Questions session on Thursdays from 2:30PM – 3:30PM PT via zoom here. No RSVP needed.

High school students should familiarize themselves with our high school admissions page and attend an information session. We do not have the capacity to meet with high school students individually.

Should I come to Quick Questions or schedule an appointment?

10 minute Quick Questions session:


  • Course registration or what to register for next quarter
  • Adding or dropping a class in the first two weeks of the quarter
  • Co-curricular opportunities and ways to get involved
  • Clearing registration holds or blocks
  • Signing quick forms
  • Career-related quick questions
  • Anything you need if appointment slots are unavailable

Schedule an appointment to talk about:


  • Long-term educational planning
  • Academic or personal concerns
  • Dropping a course starting the 3rd week of the quarter or withdrawing from quarter
  • Changing grading of course to S/NS
  • Continuation policy concerns
  • Transfer admission planning
